Course Description:

This comprehensive course provides a thorough understanding of the principles and practical application of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) diamond grading system for polished diamonds. Students will learn to accurately assess the 4Cs (Carat, Clarity, Color, and Cut) through theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory sessions are available at an extra cost. Emphasis will be placed on developing the skills necessary to confidently and consistently grade polished diamonds according to industry standards, interpret GIA grading reports, and understand the factors influencing diamond value.

  • Evaluate the cut quality of round brilliant diamonds based on GIA grading parameters (proportions, polish, and symmetry).
  • Understand the impact of cut on a diamond’s brilliance, fire, and scintillation.
  • Identify common diamond simulants and synthetics.
  • Interpret and explain the information presented in a GIA Diamond Grading Report.
  • Understand the factors that influence the pricing of polished diamonds.
  • Apply ethical practices in diamond grading and the jewelry industry.
